The area was historically a small village, with first settlement recorded in 1393. At the beginning of the 17th century, the eight buildings that stood in West Green formed the only hamlet in the central area of Tottenham - by 1840 the size had doubled. Development continued at a steady rate until the 1870s, when the introduction of the Tottenham & Hampstead Railway in 1878 saw the popularity soar, before levelling out in the 20th century.
