Arguably the most diverse and wide ranging of all the boroughs in London, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets is located in East London, and covers the majority of London’s East End.

Formed in 1965 under the merger of the former Metropolitan Boroughs of Stepney, Poplar and Bethnal Green, the authority’s unusual name is derived from an alternative title for the Tower Division (an area of south-east Middlesex). The Canary Wharf complex is a group of some of the largest buildings in Europe, including One Canada Square, the HSBC Tower, One Churchill Place and Citigroup Centres.

However, the borough also has exceptionally high rates of long term illness and premature death, and despite its wealth at the top, the second highest unemployment rate of any London borough.
