The name Timperley comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for “clearing in the forest”, and suited the town as a settlement based inside a forest with agricultural ground inside. The Bridgewater Canal was built in the 1700s and has since meant the town could be used for market gardening, and soil production for the city of Manchester at the time of its growth. The amazingly rich local soil therefore makes up most of Manchester’s ancient green spaces, and has allowed the town to produce some beautiful gardens and allotments for those living in more built-up areas.
